The March issue of Practical Dermatology has a special update regarding energy-based technologies, including coverage of ongoing Viora studies of RF Reduction and Tightening. You can read the excerpt here:

Viora: Studies of RF Reduction and Tightening Underway

A study of cellulite reduction treatment using the multifrequency RF Reaction™ is now underway, according to Viora. The study, which commenced last fall, involves the first and only multi-frequency radio-frequency cellulite treatment device available in the US. David J. Goldberg, MD is lead investigator for the study, which Viora says “will contribute to the clinical evolution of the Reaction, and will enable Viora to optimize treatment protocols further.”

Compared to single-frequency devices, the Reaction’s targeted multi-frequency RF capability is intended to provide practitioners flexibility to treat and cover a greater spectrum of cellulite conditions and their triggers.

Another study, to assess the safety and efficacy of the Reaction with the ST Applicator for temporary improvement in facial wrinkles, has nearly completed enrollment. Neil Sadick, MD is the investigator for the study, which now has some subjects with up to six months of follow-up. Clinically, physicians report use of the device for post operative irregularities, loose neck skin, and other tightening procedures.

Viora’s Reaction – A Tummy Tuck Alternative

Posted in Press, Reaction by vioramed on March 21, 2011

Viora

If you’re looking for a solution to your muffin top, or just want to tighten up your stomach for the upcoming bikini season, a March 19th article from LocateADoc.com highlights the benefits of Reaction™ as an alternative to getting a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty).

Reaction by Viora – A Tummy Tuck Alternative?

If you can’t seem to lose that belly bulge with diet and exercise, or you have a small “pooch” after having children, you may have thought about getting a tummy tuck. The tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, is plastic surgery procedure that involves removing body fat and realigning the tissues around the abdomen to create a flat, streamlined appearance. However, there may be another option for men and women who want to achieve that coveted silhouette without surgery.  Reaction by Viora is a radio-frequency, cellulite reduction and skin tightening device that can tighten and sculpt the tissues to in the abdominal area. This innovative treatment may be an alternative to tummy tuck surgery in some people.

If you have been thinking about getting a tummy tuck and want to improve the shape of your midsection, set up a consultation with a cosmetic surgeon in your area. Your surgeon can discuss the pros and cons of surgery, and determine whether you are a good candidate for the Reaction by Viora treatment.

How Reaction by Viora Can Sculpt Your Midsection

The Reaction by Viora system is designed with three treatment applicators. These applicators are able to reduce cellulite, decrease the circumference of various body parts, tighten the skin, and also shape and contour the facial tissues. The technology can deliver RF energy at four different frequencies – for a superficial treatment, for a mid-layer treatment, and also for a deep treatment. A multi-layer frequency combines all of these three modes.

If you are getting Reaction by Viora treatments around your midsection or abdominal region, the medical practitioner will adjust the frequency based on how much fat and skin tissue is located in the area. The F-Contour is especially effective for reducing localized fatty deposits in the love handles and smaller pockets of fat around the waist. The B-Contour treatment is designed to reduce cellulite and can also tighten the skin around the abdomen. Your surgeon or medical practitioner will determine which applicator and what frequency will be most appropriate for your body and to reach your goals.

Top Benefits of Reaction by Viora

Since the entire Reaction by Viora treatment is non-invasive, you don’t have to worry about many of the side effects of surgery.  Some of the other top benefits of Reaction by Viora include:

  • Reduces the circumference of the skin tissues
  • Helps to tighten and tone loose skin around the abdominals
  • Reduces bumps and the appearance of cellulite in the treated area
  • FDA-cleared device
  • Delivers immediate results
  • Reduces edema and swelling of the skin tissues

More information about the Benefits of Reaction Body Contouring Treatments can be found here.

Since any fat lost from this area isn’t permanent, you do need to maintain a healthy diet and exercise regimen to keep the fat off for good. You can return to regular activities shortly after your treatment, and there is no pain involved.

New Device Shows Promise In War Against Cellulite

NEW YORK (CBS 2) — Cellulite can show up on people of any size and it is usually unwelcomed.

There are many products and cosmetic procedures that promise to diminish cellulite; from lotions and creams to lasers or liposuction. Now there is one more tool to add to the list of fat fighters.

CBS 2’s Mary Calvi reports about a new device that was recently approved by the FDA. It does the work of two different machines.

Lisa Castronovo is fit and trim, but she can’t seem to get rid of cellulite on the back of her legs.

“No matter how much you work out it, just starts to form,” said Castronovo.

A new technology called “Reaction” is the first device that combines existing therapies to treat cellulite and fat, and tighten the skin.

“A better overall result with fewer treatments,” said Dr. Matthew Schulman of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine.

The treatment uses traditional radio frequency energy to heat the skin, and vacuum therapy to increase blood flow to the area.

“Heating will cause the collagen to shorten and tighten the skin. Or it causes a controlled injury to the fat and causes the fat to disappear,” said Schulman.

There is very little discomfort with the treatment, but there can be some bruising afterwards.

“It just felt like someone was giving me a massage with really hot heat,” said Castronovo.

According to doctors, it usually takes a few visits to see the effects. A single maintenance treatment once or twice a year afterwards is suggested.

Insurance won’t cover procedures like this because it’s cosmetic. It will leave a dent in your wallet, costing about $2,500 for a six-week treatment.

For patients like Castronovo, it is worth it.

“I feel a lot better,” she said.

Mini Case Study – 2nd post

Lisa Treatment #2:

Lisa enjoys the Reaction treatment very much. Throughout the treatment she kept saying that it felt like a really great shiatsu massage. When the LaserTouch Soho technician asked Lisa if they could increase the suction level, Lisa welcomed the idea and enjoyed the treatment even more!!

Lisa noticed a small improvement in her skin’s tightness since the first treatment. Congratulations on your success Lisa!!

Here are Lisa’s pictures. Great improvement! The appearance of Cellulite on the left leg is almost gone!

Natalie Treatment #2:

Natalie enjoyed treatment #2 very much.  Although the technician increased the suction level for this treatment, Natalie felt much less discomfort than she did during her first treatment. She felt very calm and relaxed throughout and even dozed off for a moment. She did not notice a very big improvement since the first treatment, however, the technician explained to her that it is perfectly normal not to see results right away, which put her at ease.

We look forward to your success Natalie!!!

Susan Treatment #2:

Susan enjoyed her second treatment very much. Her treatment began using a higher vacuum setting than the first treatment since she showed no bruising, however, she experienced slight discomfort which her technician told her was because of her skin’s laxity.  Her technician determined, that moving forward with Susan’s treatments, she would stick with the lower setting to minimize discomfort.  Susan did not bruise after this treatment and has noticed an improvement laxity of her skin.

Great Progress Susan!!

Reducing Cellulite Mini Case Study – Viora and LaserTouch Soho

Viora - Revealing Your Potential

Mini Case Study Overview:

Viora and LaserTouchSoho are conducting a mini case study following the progress of four women’s six-week treatment regimen to reduce cellulite with Viora’s Reaction system. The women’s age and fitness level varies.  We will post her results and observations to the revolutionary new Reaction™ aesthetic system.

The Reaction™ works by combining radio frequency energy, heat, and suction to attack cellulite deep within the layers of your skin.  The Reaction™ by Viora offers lasting results after the series of treatments and will require only 1 to 2 maintenance treatments.

What sets the Viora Reaction™ treatment apart from other cellulite reduction treatments is that it attacks the cellulite condition with varying frequencies (modes) penetrating the different depths of the tissue.  It also has another mode which combines these frequencies together.

A cellulite treatment begins with the fourth mode, which typically lasts about five minutes.  This mode works to raise the temperature of the skin to the proper range for the treatment to be effective.  The second stage is the longest, lasting about ten minutes. During this stage, the energy penetrates the deepest, focusing on the cellulite layer. The latter stage of the treatment uses the other modes, or frequencies for a short during lasting only two minutes each in order to focus on smoothing the texture of the cellulite.

At the end of the treatment, you can continue your normal daily routines.

Natalie

Natalie is in her early twenties and her weight has caused her suffering for much of her life. Recently, she began developing cellulite on her buttocks and the back of her thighs. She was approached by Lasertouch Soho to participate in this case study. We will track her results during the six-week treatment.

For the majority of the time during her first treatment, Natalie claims to have really enjoyed the treatment, comparing it to a deep tissue massage. There were points where the heat became a little intense which brought about minimal pain which was easily tolerable.  However, for the most part she did not find the process painful because the aesthetician tailored the treatment to her comfort level.

During her consultation, Natalie expressed concern over her tendency to bruise easily, however she did not experience any bruising or unpleasant side effects as a result of the treatment.  Good Luck, we can’t wait to see your progress!!

Lisa:

Lisa is in her late twenties. She is in fairly good shape and is at a healthy weight for her height and frame. Although Lisa is moderately active she suffers from small pockets of cellulite on the backs of her thighs.

Lisa enjoyed the cellulite treatment very much and even commented that she would love to take the machine home with her. She found the process very therapeutic and relaxing.

Lisa did not complain about any pain or bruising following the treatment. She is looking forward to her next session and we look forward to her progress.

Best of Luck Lisa!!

Susan:

Susan is in her early 60’s and is of average build and healthy body weight. After seeking many ways to rid herself of the cellulite on the back of her thighs, she approached the professionals at Laser Touch Soho. After her consultation, due to her age and sensitivity to bruising, her technician chose to begin her treatments on lower vacuum setting. We are happy to report that Susan has not experienced any bruising or discomfort after her first treatment.

We look forward to seeing her results!!

CORE™ Technology: Understanding Penetration Depths of Different RF Modes

Posted in Info by vioramed on July 26, 2010

Viora - Revealing Your Potential

Reaction™’s CORE™ technology introduces a new dimension in RF aesthetic treatments that allows practitioners to independently control heating depth, but how and why is this important?

First though, what is Radio Frequency and why is it important to control it in the aesthetic world?

Radiofrequency (RF) energy is a form of electromagnetic energy. When applied to tissue, it produces electromagnetic fields, which results in the generation of heat.  This heat effect has various aesthetic applications such as treatment of cellulite, tightening of lax skin, and for the reduction of thigh and buttocks circumference.  Radiofrequency used for aesthetic purposes can be either monopolar (meaning a single electrode tip) or bipolar (two electrode tips).  Since bipolar energy is more localized, less energy is required to achieve the same heating effect thus allowing safer treatments.

Radio frequencies’ aesthetic effects are based on a mild heating of the skin’s underlying network of collagen and elastin fibers which can lead to collagen shrinkage and thickening, improving skin’s firmness and elasticity.  To this end, depth control of the heating effect is highly desired since different aesthetic imperfections originate from different skin layers and in different anatomical sites the thickness of skin layers varies significantly.

What is CORE™ technology?

Reaction™’s CORE™ technology incorporates unique variable frequency settings to precisely control RF penetration depth in underlying tissue. Reaction’s four different frequency modes can be independently chosen by the operator for any energy and probe setting to control the heating depth effect as required with each patient and each application. In addition, CORE™ technology incorporates tissue vacuum massage which assists in achieving even greater heat penetration which is important when treating the subcutaneous layer.

To prove that the Reaction™ does what Viora says it does, an in-vivo study was conducted using a thermal video camera to determine the tissue heating depth effects at the different RF frequencies available with CORE™ technology in the Reaction™ system.  The Reaction™ system was applied on animal skin using protocols similar to those recommended for the different human aesthetic applications using Reaction’s three different RF applicators which are intended for large body areas (BC), small and sensitive body areas (FC) and smaller areas using RF energy only (ST).

Results from the study showed that heating depths for the different RF frequencies confirm the theory that RF penetration depth in tissue is an inverse function of frequency.  For all applicators tested, heating depth observed was greatest for the lowest RF mode (0.8 MHz) applied and smallest for the highest frequency (2.45 MHz).  As an example, for the ST applicator (no vacuum) heating depths measured were 7.2 mm, 5.1 mm & 3.9 mm corresponding to frequencies of 0.8 MHz, 1.7MHz and 2.45 MHz.  A total heating depth range from 3.9 mm to 18.6 mm was measured for the treatment parameters used in the study on porcine skin.

To summarize, the unique variable frequency capability in Reaction™’s CORE™ technology, in addition to the ability to vary tissue heating effects by changing RF intensity level, vacuum intensity level and applicator configuration, allows utmost control when performing the full range of available RF aesthetic applications on different body areas and patient types.

Energy bursts to tighten skin without surgery

Phyliss Cunningham’s advertising career puts her in the spotlight.

Phyllis Cunningham “I have to go to a meeting, and I can’t be in my 50s, I have to be in my 40s to deal with 30 year olds who think they know it all!”

To maintain her looks, Phyllis is getting a skin-tightening treatment, called the viora reaction. It can offer up to three types of radiofrequency energy at once.

Dr Neal Sadick explains, “This is a unique profile, having the capability to have more than one radiofrequency energy level and capability to do the radiofrequency to different levels is a very advanced, again, second generation part of this technology.”

The energy control allows doctors to better target the treatment.

“So you are basically customizing the treatment for your particular body and your particular body part that you want to try to tighten.” says Dr. Sadick.

The energy burst triggers an initial tightening of existing collagen, but also sets off wound-healing.

Dr. Sadick says, “That wounding response actually causes your body to stimulate new cells, called fibroblasts, bring them to the area that’s heated, and those fibroblasts are the major cells that produce new collagen.”

Those fibroblasts work for months to prompt the skin tightening effect.

Dr. Sadick says, “You continue to tighten your collagen bundles, and that leads to improvement that continues for up to twelve months after a single treatment session.”

Results Phyliss hopes will help keep her at the head of the pack.

Treatments typically cost about $1,000 dollars each, though most doctors offer packages to bring down the cost. Depending on what you want to have done, four to eight 15-minute sessions are needed.
