CORE™ Technology: Understanding Penetration Depths of Different RF Modes

Posted in Info by vioramed on July 26, 2010

Viora - Revealing Your Potential

Reaction™’s CORE™ technology introduces a new dimension in RF aesthetic treatments that allows practitioners to independently control heating depth, but how and why is this important?

First though, what is Radio Frequency and why is it important to control it in the aesthetic world?

Radiofrequency (RF) energy is a form of electromagnetic energy. When applied to tissue, it produces electromagnetic fields, which results in the generation of heat.  This heat effect has various aesthetic applications such as treatment of cellulite, tightening of lax skin, and for the reduction of thigh and buttocks circumference.  Radiofrequency used for aesthetic purposes can be either monopolar (meaning a single electrode tip) or bipolar (two electrode tips).  Since bipolar energy is more localized, less energy is required to achieve the same heating effect thus allowing safer treatments.

Radio frequencies’ aesthetic effects are based on a mild heating of the skin’s underlying network of collagen and elastin fibers which can lead to collagen shrinkage and thickening, improving skin’s firmness and elasticity.  To this end, depth control of the heating effect is highly desired since different aesthetic imperfections originate from different skin layers and in different anatomical sites the thickness of skin layers varies significantly.

What is CORE™ technology?

Reaction™’s CORE™ technology incorporates unique variable frequency settings to precisely control RF penetration depth in underlying tissue. Reaction’s four different frequency modes can be independently chosen by the operator for any energy and probe setting to control the heating depth effect as required with each patient and each application. In addition, CORE™ technology incorporates tissue vacuum massage which assists in achieving even greater heat penetration which is important when treating the subcutaneous layer.

To prove that the Reaction™ does what Viora says it does, an in-vivo study was conducted using a thermal video camera to determine the tissue heating depth effects at the different RF frequencies available with CORE™ technology in the Reaction™ system.  The Reaction™ system was applied on animal skin using protocols similar to those recommended for the different human aesthetic applications using Reaction’s three different RF applicators which are intended for large body areas (BC), small and sensitive body areas (FC) and smaller areas using RF energy only (ST).

Results from the study showed that heating depths for the different RF frequencies confirm the theory that RF penetration depth in tissue is an inverse function of frequency.  For all applicators tested, heating depth observed was greatest for the lowest RF mode (0.8 MHz) applied and smallest for the highest frequency (2.45 MHz).  As an example, for the ST applicator (no vacuum) heating depths measured were 7.2 mm, 5.1 mm & 3.9 mm corresponding to frequencies of 0.8 MHz, 1.7MHz and 2.45 MHz.  A total heating depth range from 3.9 mm to 18.6 mm was measured for the treatment parameters used in the study on porcine skin.

To summarize, the unique variable frequency capability in Reaction™’s CORE™ technology, in addition to the ability to vary tissue heating effects by changing RF intensity level, vacuum intensity level and applicator configuration, allows utmost control when performing the full range of available RF aesthetic applications on different body areas and patient types.

Energy bursts to tighten skin without surgery

Phyliss Cunningham’s advertising career puts her in the spotlight.

Phyllis Cunningham “I have to go to a meeting, and I can’t be in my 50s, I have to be in my 40s to deal with 30 year olds who think they know it all!”

To maintain her looks, Phyllis is getting a skin-tightening treatment, called the viora reaction. It can offer up to three types of radiofrequency energy at once.

Dr Neal Sadick explains, “This is a unique profile, having the capability to have more than one radiofrequency energy level and capability to do the radiofrequency to different levels is a very advanced, again, second generation part of this technology.”

The energy control allows doctors to better target the treatment.

“So you are basically customizing the treatment for your particular body and your particular body part that you want to try to tighten.” says Dr. Sadick.

The energy burst triggers an initial tightening of existing collagen, but also sets off wound-healing.

Dr. Sadick says, “That wounding response actually causes your body to stimulate new cells, called fibroblasts, bring them to the area that’s heated, and those fibroblasts are the major cells that produce new collagen.”

Those fibroblasts work for months to prompt the skin tightening effect.

Dr. Sadick says, “You continue to tighten your collagen bundles, and that leads to improvement that continues for up to twelve months after a single treatment session.”

Results Phyliss hopes will help keep her at the head of the pack.

Treatments typically cost about $1,000 dollars each, though most doctors offer packages to bring down the cost. Depending on what you want to have done, four to eight 15-minute sessions are needed.

Viora launches a unique Risk Free Program to help medical aesthetic providers introduce the Reaction™, an innovative multi-frequency RF device for cellulite reduction and skin tightening.

Posted in Press by vioramed on May 3, 2010

We announced this exciting news this afternoon and want to share it with you!

Viora, a leading medical aesthetic manufacturer, announces the launch of a unique Risk Free Program for the Reaction™ – the new generation in Body Contouring and Skin Tightening! The program is available to medical aesthetic providers in the United States who are currently performing body contouring treatments but are looking for an upgrade in technology, or to those introducing it to their practice for the first time.  Providers can get the Reaction™ for as little as $10,000 for a period of three months, without any commitment to buy the system at the end of the program.

“The economic situation, combined with skepticism in the market regarding cellulite reduction solutions due to the failure of other devices to deliver results, forced us to conceive this innovative program” says Viora CEO Josef Luzon in a press release. “The logic behind the program is that a practice with the right amount of traffic, can recap its investment in the program with just five patients for a series of treatments over three months; a long enough period to work with the system and  feel comfortable in making the decision to purchase” he adds.

“The Risk Free program gives us the opportunity to truly test the potential of the system both clinically and financially. We are a month into the program and have already signed up enough patients to cover the cost of the program, and are getting great clinical results from the system” says Angel Turlington, WHNP, owner of Southeast Women’s Center in Clayton, NC. “It seems we will be able to accumulate enough revenue to cover a large portion of the system’s cost at the end of the period”

New RF-Based Device Dials In Multiple Frequencies

Viora Inc, Jersey City, NJ, recently launched its FDA-cleared multifrequency and vacuum therapy bipolar radio frequency (RF) device, the Reaction, at the American Academy of Dermatologists (AAD) annual meeting and exhibition in Miami in March 2010.

The Reaction device is intended for treating cellulite, as well as body contouring and skin tightening. The unit offers a unique multiple-frequency approach to RF treatments, based on the firm’s Channeling Optimized RF Energy (CORE) technology.

Viora CEO Josef Luzon explains the reason for developing the CORE technology. “Most of the systems out there are working with one frequency,” he says. “Working with one frequency has limitations. We came up with a technology that works with three frequencies in four different modes.” This allows for better control of the depth of penetration, he adds.

This technology lets physician work in three distinct RF frequencies suitable for deep, middle, and superficial treatments—0.8 MHz, 1.7 MHz, and 2.45 MHz. In addition, the device offers a fourth mode that can dial in the other three frequencies at the same time.

As an indication of the unit’s practical application, for example, the 0.8 MHz frequency penetrates up to 18.6 mm for body contouring (with vacuum) and up to 7.2 mm for skin-tightening applications, according to the company.

AAD 2010 Overload

Posted in Meeting by vioramed on March 9, 2010

From the Aesthetic Blog by Jeff Frentzen – PSP

What Comdex is to computer professionals, the annual AAD (American Academy of Dermatology) scientific meeting is to derms, and by no means is the AAD anything less than a good show. The organizers choose venues that provide good support to attendees inasfar as elbow room on the exhibit floor and several fair-to-middling fast food joints (overpriced) on the various decks and in the four halls. As I type this, in between quickie meetings with a few esteemed physicians, the scientific sessions are quietly bustling. The AAD this year seemed to fill every room at the 4-hall Miami Beach Convention Center. The attendee count was over 19,000, according to the AAD.

For the aesthetic practitioner, new products in the laser- and light-based devices category included offerings from Sciton, Palomar, and Viora, among others. These devices go straight for the body contouring crowd and those who employ “touch-up laser” technologies when treating post-lipo conditions. A wide range of skin care treatments dot the show floor, with a cast of corporations that one expects — J&J, Allergan, Neutrogena — and the many more smaller entrepreneurships that seemed to be on every aisle. The scientific sessions that I have attended were mostly full.

I did not attend the keynote by Donna Shalala, the former Secretary of Health and Human Services, and would have preferred Dave Barry in her place, as he was originally scheduled to speak here. However, Shalala is probably more in keeping with the serious side of dermatology and health care issues.

For those of us who watched the steady stream of speeches and pitches from video monitors throughout the halls, the new AAD president is Lynn Drake, MD, Professor and Chair of the Department of dermatology at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City.

Throughout the upcoming week, check this blog and the PSP Web site home page for additional news and updates that came out of this year’s AAD meeting.
